Reddit blocker
Block Reddit until you've earned it.
"Just checking Reddit" is how a morning goes. Onus is a browser extension that seals Reddit and gives it back in measured minutes, paid for by time on your work sites.
Not a wall, a price
Blocking Reddit outright tends to last until the first time you really want it, and then the blocker gets switched off. With Onus, Reddit is never gone. It just costs something: 10 minutes of Reddit for every 25 minutes of work.
How it works
- Seal the sites that pull you away, like Reddit, YouTube, X or Instagram. Their subdomains are sealed too.
- Pick your work sites, like Google Docs, GitHub, Notion or your course pages. Active time there fills a bank.
- Spend from the bank. Open a sealed site and Onus offers 5, 10 or 15 minutes from it. When the time runs out, the seal comes back.
Every 25 minutes of work buys 10 minutes of play. The bank holds up to 2 hours and resets at midnight, and five emergency minutes a day never touch it.
The scroll stops on time
- Play time runs only while you are looking at the tab. Switch away and it pauses, so you don't pay for a tab left open.
- When your minutes are up, the seal closes, even mid-thread.
- The seal holds through new tabs, links and back buttons, and "Test my seal" shows you it does.
- Unsealing Reddit takes a 10-minute wait, so a sudden urge passes before the change does.
Where it works
Chrome and Edge on any computer, including Mac, Linux and Chromebooks. Onus for Windows also seals apps and other browsers. Not on phones yet. Your site lists, bank and browsing stay in your browser (see the privacy policy).
