Onus vs LeechBlock
LeechBlock NG is a free, flexible blocker: you say which sites to block and when. Onus seals the same sites, but opens them in minutes you've earned: every 25 minutes on your work sites buys 10 minutes back.
Here is where each one is the better pick, as fairly as we can put it. We make Onus, so check LeechBlock's own site too.
The short answer
- Pick LeechBlock if you want a free tool with fine control over schedules and limits, in Firefox as well as Chrome and Edge.
- Pick Onus if schedules and limits get switched off, and you'd rather earn your breaks with real work and see that work counted.
Side by side
| Onus | LeechBlock NG | |
|---|---|---|
| The idea | Work earns play: time on work sites fills a bank that pays for sealed sites. | Blocks sites at the times you set, or after a time limit. |
| Counts your work | Yes, active time on the work sites you pick. | No. Limits are set by the clock. |
| Blocking | Any site and its subdomains, with path exceptions. YouTube opens plain: no feed, Shorts or suggestions. | Up to 30 block sets, each with its own times and days, wildcards and exceptions. |
| Strictness | A 10-minute wait to unseal, strictness levels, locks up to 30 days, sealed hours, an exit code. | Lockdown for a set time, and a password or random code for its options. |
| Someone to answer to | A partner gets an email if you loosen the seal, use the exit code or remove Onus. | Not offered. |
| Browsers | Chrome and Edge. Onus for Windows seals apps and other browsers. | Firefox, Chrome, Edge and other Chromium browsers. |
| Price | Free plan with 2 sealed sites and 1 work site. Full Onus $29.99 a year or $59 once, with a 7-day free trial. | Free. |

Where LeechBlock is stronger
It's free, it works in Firefox, and its block sets give fine control over exactly when each group of sites is blocked. If you know the schedule you want, it's a very good tool.
Where Onus is different
Onus is built for people who switch blockers off. Instead of a schedule, there's a bank: you always know what your next 25 minutes of work will buy, so the seal feels fair and stays on.
